Guardianship services the needs of students who are currently attending
school and those who are submitting a post-A-level application to
university or college. It complements the help and advice given by
careers teachers at schools, since during the application cycle, many
students find it helpful and supportive to be able to contact a third
party in order to check on procedure, ask for advice or simply seek
reassurance. This is our major function and in this way we can act
as Careers Adviser and Educational Guardian.
Students who enrol with us will need to visit
us in Oxford on several occasions, especially when we reach the
stage of completing a UCAS application form. Other immediate and
pressing problems can usually be solved by telephone. Parents wishing
to enrol their son or daughter under the Educational Guardianship
scheme should complete the enclosed registration form.
Competition for degree course places continues
to intensify, as does competition for jobs after higher education.
In the current round of university applications it is clear that
the rapid expansion of available places has come to an end. It is
imperative, therefore, that students give careful thought to their
applications. Oxford Educational Consulting offers realistic, personal
and specialist advice which will maximise the chances of a successful
application.
As part of the Educational Guardianship scheme,
we will:
* Discuss and assess possible career options
* Produce a short-list of suitable higher education
courses
* Discuss these courses in detail, give an
indication of grade requirements, special subject requirements and
the level of competition for places
* Give clear and positive information on taking
a 'GAP' year
* Assist in completing the UCAS form, in particular
the 'Further Information' section, which is the students' main opportunity
to market themselves
* Give advice on preparation for interviews
and, if appropriate, hold mock interview sessions
* Monitor progress throughout the academic
year and be available at all stages to give continuing assistance
* Provide access to necessary educational and
careers research materials
* Where appropriate, administer a guidance
questionnaire such as that provided in the Centigrade Higher Education
Courses Programme *.
* Centigrade Higher Education Courses Programme is produced by
Cambridge Occupational Analysts (COA) and administered in conjunction
with the Universities and Colleges Admissions System (UCAS).
